Sao Félix Wellness & Longevity Resort, Portugal
Wellness repositioning concept for a hospitality destination centred on longevity, recovery and preventive health
SummaryBiofilico was appointed by the RINA Group in Lisbon to help shape the wellness and longevity repositioning of Sao Félix, a hospitality project in northern Portugal being reimagined as a more accessible wellness-led resort.
Rather than treating wellness as a secondary spa offer within a conventional hotel, the ambition was to reposition the property around a broader longevity and preventive health vision.
This meant thinking beyond a standalone gym or spa and instead developing an integrated guest experience built around diagnostics, movement, recovery, thermal therapies, outdoor activity, rest and restorative hospitality.
The project is a strong example of our strategic role in wellness hospitality: helping define how active and restorative amenities fit into a bigger commercial, spatial and experiential strategy for a resort.

the brief
The brief
The project brief was to reposition Sao Félix as a wellness and longevity resort rather than a standard regional hotel
The opportunity lay in creating a destination that could feel commercially relevant within the growing wellness travel market, while remaining more accessible than the ultra-premium longevity clinics and destination spas that dominate the high end of the sector.
This required a broader concept that could bring together:
movement and fitness
diagnostics and testing
thermal and hydrothermal recovery
outdoor activity
meditation and quieter restorative zones
hospitality spaces that support longer dwell time and healthier routines
The objective was not simply to add a spa and gym, but to define a more compelling wellness proposition for the whole property.
our design strategy
Biofilico approached Sao Félix as a wellness hospitality repositioning project.
The concept was developed around four interconnected ideas:
1. Longevity made more accessible
The resort was conceived as a destination where guests could engage with wellness and preventive health in a more approachable, less clinical format.
2. A layered guest journey
Movement, recovery, diagnostics, food, rest and outdoor activity were planned as connected parts of a single experience rather than isolated amenities.
3. Wellness amenities as strategic infrastructure
The gym, studio, spa and outdoor activity spaces were treated as core to the business model, not simply supporting facilities.
4. Resort identity shaped by wellbeing
The design direction aimed to position the entire resort around healthier living, recovery and performance-enhancing rest.
wellness vision
Wellness vision
The core vision for Sao Félix was to create a hospitality destination that supports both restoration and optimisation.
That meant blending more traditional hospitality comfort with a stronger health and wellbeing agenda, including:
physical training
recovery and thermal contrast
testing and diagnostics
restorative outdoor experiences
quiet spaces for meditation and downregulation
In this sense, the project sits between a hotel, a wellness retreat and a longevity-oriented resort.
It was conceived not as a medicalised destination, but as a place where guests could proactively invest in their wellbeing through a more complete and immersive stay.
spatial planning
Spatial planning & guest journey
A major part of the project was the organisation of the wellness offer across multiple levels and indoor / outdoor zones.
The concept brought together a range of complementary spaces so that different types of guests could build different wellness journeys, from more active stays to slower, recovery-led experiences.
The planning strategy included:
gym and strength / cardio space
functional and movement-based training areas
group studio space
diagnostics and assessment areas
thermal and hydrothermal recovery
meditation and relaxation zones
outdoor activity and racquet-sport functions
rooftop and exterior wellness features
This layered planning was central to the project because it allowed the resort to move beyond a single spa-and-gym model toward a fuller wellness destination identity.
wellness amenity design
Wellness amenity design
Within the broader hospitality concept, Biofilico integrated a series of key wellness amenities designed to support both active use and restorative use.
These included:
a main fitness space
movement and studio areas
spa and thermal recovery experiences
ice bath / cold therapy elements
meditation and quieter retreat zones
rooftop and outdoor wellness functions
diagnostics and assessment components
These spaces are not presented as isolated technical rooms. They matter because they help translate the longevity concept into a tangible guest experience and make the resort’s wellness positioning credible.
diagnostics & recovery
Diagnostics, recovery and preventive health
One of the differentiating ideas within the Sao Félix concept was the integration of diagnostics and preventive health thinking into the wider hospitality journey.
This helped shift the project beyond a traditional “spa break” model and toward something more aligned with current longevity trends.
The intention was to create an environment where guests could combine:
testing and self-awareness
movement and physical conditioning
structured recovery
sleep, rest and nervous-system regulation
healthier daily rituals during their stay
That combination is important because it gives the project a clearer place within the growing overlap between wellness hospitality and longevity travel.
outdoor wellness
Outdoor wellness & activities
A strong part of the Sao Félix concept was the use of outdoor wellness and activity infrastructure to expand the offer beyond the building envelope.
This included a mix of exterior movement, training and contemplation spaces designed to make the most of the resort setting and encourage guests to engage with fresh air, daylight and lower-intensity physical activity as part of the overall wellbeing journey.
This matters on the Biofilico side because outdoor wellness is not only about exercise. It also contributes to the emotional and sensory quality of the destination and helps create a more holistic hospitality experience.
project outcome
Why this project matters
Sao Félix demonstrates how a hospitality asset can be repositioned around wellness and longevity rather than relying on a conventional hotel model with a few added amenities.
It shows the value of thinking strategically about:
the guest journey
the role of diagnostics and preventive health
the commercial importance of active and restorative amenities
how wellness spaces are sequenced and integrated
the relationship between indoor and outdoor wellbeing experiences
In other words, it is not simply a design project. It is a wellness hospitality concept with spatial, operational and brand implications.
Outcome
The Sao Félix concept established a clearer and more ambitious direction for the resort as a wellness and longevity destination.
By integrating movement, diagnostics, recovery, thermal experiences, meditation and outdoor activity into one joined-up hospitality vision, the project moved well beyond the idea of a standard hotel spa.
It created the basis for a more distinctive and commercially relevant wellbeing offer, one capable of appealing to guests looking for both restoration and health-focused self-investment.
For Biofilico, it is an important reference for how wellness amenity design can support a broader repositioning strategy in hospitality.
